Dear Oma,
I have dealt with trauma for quite a while now. Certain smells and sounds still take me back to the day it all happened. Will I ever be able to handle these things again without such a negative response to them? Do things ever get easier?
Signed,
Wounded
Dear Wounded,
Trauma is difficult and different from person to person. Some people find it strange how a certain smell or sound really does set things off, but it’s true, it does. For me, even 35 years after trauma, some things still affect me, but some things are easier. All you can do is keep trying. Take things day by day, try to see the positive side of the negative things. Like instead of thinking this is the day I almost died, thinking this is the day I survived. I’m not saying it’s easy to turn anything negative into positive, but each time you can, makes things a little easier. Stand tall and proud, take care of yourself, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Always remember, you are not alone. You have several friends who are there for you. Sending hugs.
Signed,
Oma
