Kart racing

Posted on April 24, 2023April 24, 2023 by Karen McIlwain

Kart racing season is here again. If you like driving low to the ground in something fairly fast, this is the sport for you. These karts are quite different from amusement karts that you can ride in fairs and amusement parks. There are slow 4-cycle karts, which generally run in the 45-50 mph range, 2 cycles will go 70+ mph, and the high-end shifters will do 80-90mph on the straightaways. If you are between the ages of 5 and 95 and want to see what this is all about, talk to Andy with Big Sky Kart at (406) 662-8378.

Big Sky Kart sells numerous kart parts including tires, oils, complete engines, tools, apparel, and safety gear. They have a parts trailer that they take to the races so you can purchase your parts right there at the track and save the shipping cost. This is a limited space option though so if you have something you want to order, let them know beforehand so they know to take it with them.

If you want to try karting without having to purchase a kart, check out their Arrive and Race program. This program allows you to rent one of their karts, enter the race, and see if it is something you would enjoy before investing in a kart, tools, spare parts, not to mention the time spent on maintenance.

Neo Gothic Racing is their official racing team. The team members help each other and others to the best of their ability. They sometimes offer a coaching service which is quite involved with the use of cameras, showing people race craft and how to improve their lap times.

Each year they compete in Helena with Montana Karting Association (MKA), which is a member funded organization, on a track located at the Rocky Mountain Emergency Services training track, 3425 Skyway Drive.

There are 10 races scheduled for this year, with the first one being Saturday, April 29th. Whether you want to watch, drive, or even volunteer to help, there is always a place for you.
